It is important to start moving your new joint as soon as possible after surgery to promote blood flow, to regain motion and to facilitate the recovery process. You will most likely be out of bed and walking with crutches or a walker within 24 hours of your surgery.
When you can start walking varies, depending on the type of operation you have and the views of the surgeon and physiotherapist. If you have had minimally invasive surgery you might be able to walk on the same day. If you have had a knee replacement you may need to use crutches or a walking frame initially. If your knee replacement is due to rheumatoid arthritis you may have to rest for longer.
